Marshmallow (Althaea Officinalis is an all-natural flowering medicinal herb that’s a perennial plant. Throughout damp locations of Western Asia and Europe the marshmallow plant is native. Althaea in Greek means to cure.  Althaea officinalis/Marshmallow in herbal medicine is known as a demulcent herb, which is rich in complex carbohydrates also known as mucopolysaccharides.

 

The plant has been utilized as an herbal medicine for centuries by various cultures but used broadly in Greek and European medicine. The herb consists of cut dried leaves and roots or whole and cut.

  • Marshmallow root/leaf has a broad range of potential benefits for improving certain health issues particularly related to heartburns/acid reflux, digestive issues, coughs, and bronchitis, coryza (runny nose), throat soreness and disorders, pneumonia, kidney stones, bladder and belly pain, lactation, including soothing the stomach and intestinal tract, etc. It brings healing to all tissues it encounters.

    Marshmallow is typically quite suitable for consumption with zero to minimal side effects. However, it may cause dizziness and upset stomach.  It’s significant to know that heat destroys mucopolysaccharides. Therefore, if making a tea from either marshmallow root or marshmallow leaf, it's best to use water that’s at room temperature.
